Tribal ATS® (American Tribal Style®) was developed in the United States in the late sixties and the movements are inspired by folkloric dances of the Middle East, North Africa, Spain and India. It is a collective dance based on guided improvisation. In the seventies the style evolved with several instructors, the notion of the tribe-feeling and guided improvisation started and Carolena Nericcio (founder of Tribale ATS® and president of the Fat Chance BellyDance - FCBD®) defined the concept of the movements. The definition of a common vocabulary was indispensable for a certain synchronisation of the dancers. Tribal ATS® is based on the collective and not the individual dancer as the tribe is the cornerstone of this style. It is all about sharing, cohesion and pleasure in dancing together.
The Éléphant Paname dance center recommends having some skills in Egyptian belly dance to participate.
